Highworth - A Lasting Legacy

On the 25/05/2025, this letter was sent to all Labour SBC Councillors, Will Stone MP and Sam Mowbray

On the 4th June, you have a crucial decision to make that will leave a permanent legacy for Highworth.

Virtually the entire population of Highworth have chosen Option 1: for Highworth’s Old Golf Course to become a Nature Park, in its entirety.

As an ancient, historically significant hilltop town surrounded by beautiful countryside, Highworth is a true "jewel in the crown" for the local community and the Borough.

What the people of Highworth are asking for is:

  1. Sustainable Development: Encouraging sustainable, low-impact projects that do not compromise the surrounding countryside or overwhelm local infrastructure.
  2. Environmental Protection: Protecting the countryside and local biodiversity, maintaining the open green space that contributes to the town's scenic surroundings. The site is a haven for nature, with over 300 species of flora and fauna having been identified there.
  3. Historical Preservation: Ensuring that any future developments respect the historical architecture and character of the town, maintaining its heritageappeal. The Old Golf Course is right on the edge of a conservation area, and building here would impact our many listed buildings, as you can see in the photo below.
  4. Community Involvement: Engaging with residents and local stakeholders to advocate for planning decisions that honour the town’s heritage and natural beauty. Highworth residents feel that they have been excluded from the process leading to the decision on the future of the Old Golf Course by SBC.

Highworth can continue to be a shining example of how ancient towns can coexist with modern development while preserving their unique character and environmental integrity.

The people will remember the decision you are about to make
